While many of you may recognize him from his family friendly television appearances as an eye specialist, the man behind the scalpel (or laser as it may be), is much more than just your everyday ‘celebrity doctor’. Born into one of the most typical Bangladeshi families, Dr. Zaman grew up the doting older brother of 8 siblings and till date remains the devoted patriarch of his own little family, a trait that is constantly translated over in the way he treats his patients – ‘Family first, and everyone is someone’s family.’

From Adamjee Cantonment School to Dhaka Medical College, Dr. Zaman’s star-studded schooling has been a classic story of hard work indeed paying off. Having finally joined Government Service as a Medical Officer in 1988, he has then gone on to widen his horizons, and worked in not only the remote regions of Banderban, Brahmanbaria and Gazipur, here in Bangladesh, but on completing his USMLE in 1996, he proceeded to spend an additional two years in New York serving in the prestigious Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Centre.

However, the homeland beckoned and by 1999 he found it impossible not to come back to the country that had given him so much. Upon his return, Dr. Zaman once again began to practice in a variety of hospitals including Dhaka Medical College and Sir Salimullah Medical College, while also obtaining a Diploma in Ophthalmology from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and both his MCPS and FCPS degrees from the College of Physicians and Surgeons. Later, Dr. Zaman had joined as an Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Ophthalmology (NIO) and then had the amazing opportunity to go to be trained in Nepal at the expense of the Australian Government, only to come back as Chief Trainer in Microsurgery for Eye Consultants.

From 2013 to 2016, Dr. Zaman, served as an Associate Professor at the National Institute of Ophthalmology (NIO), and was then once again promoted to Professor and Head of Manikganj’s Colonel Malek Medical College, later furthering his role into that of Principal before finally being transferred back to NIO in 2019 as Professor of Cataract and Femtosecond Laser Surgery. Dr. Zaman is also a Director and Consultant of Phaco at Bangladesh Eye Hospital Uttara Ltd, where he is available from Sundays through Thursdays, in the evenings.

In his spare time Dr. Zaman is a connoisseur of classical subcontinental music and avid singer in his own right.
